In Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails, Ted Haigh shares this variation on Trader Vic's original Navy Grog. It calls for allspice dram (also known as pimento dram.) As Haigh writes:
Pimento Dram may bring to mind the flavorless, wadded-up thing beheld in many a martini olive, but trust me, this is a wholly different pimento...a peppercorn of sorts...The English christened it 'allspice.' The berry seemed to them to encapsulate the flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, and clove all in one little peppery wallop.
The allspice dram adds an excellent dose of warm spice to the drink—just be sure not to overpour. We like St. Elizabeth Allspice dram, imported by Haus Alpenz, which you can purchase online.
