"What a Country!": Post Dunkin' Caramel Macchiato Cereal, Reviewed

If your caramel macchiato were a bowl of cereal, here's how Dunkin' and Post think it would taste.

In July, Post Consumer Brands and Dunkin’ Donuts announced a collaboration in the form of “Dunkin’” cereal, made with real Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. The cereal comes in two flavors—Caramel Macchiato and Mocha Latte—and they both contain small amounts of caffeine, “so all can indulge in the rich coffee-forward experience.”

A month later, I found Dunkin’ cereal in my local grocery store, placed prominently in the section devoted to novelty and sugary cereals, designed to attract young children and adults who should know better. Of the two flavors, I chose the Caramel Macchiato because I thought it might be a little more interesting than a chocolate-and-coffee-flavored cereal.

I was wrong, but not in a bad way.

The cereal was good, with a strong but pleasant coffee flavor, not unlike coffee ice cream. It left good milk, too. But I strained to taste caramel in each bite; the supposedly caramel-flavored marshmallows only tasted like, well, marshmallows. Far from interesting, this crazy-sounding cereal was actually pretty boring.

If you’re hoping to have a crazy experience with a novelty cereal, look elsewhere. But if you’re looking to have a pretty decent bowl of coffee-flavored refined grains and sugar, you should give it a shot.

Verdict: 3.5 out of 5 spoons
