New: One-off: Great Jones Casserole Hot Dish tout

Serious Eats / Reese Herrington

It might sound like something your grandma would’ve brought to a potluck in the ‘60s, but we consider the humble casserole dish a modern kitchen essential. While you may or may not not use yours to make Kenji’s green bean casserole recipe, standard 9-by-13 pans are incredibly versatile and come in handy for everything from holiday stuffing to apple crumbles

And when you find a casserole dish that’s as visually appealing as it is durable, it can go straight from the oven to the center of the dining table. The Great Jones Hot Dish was the best-designed casserole of the nine we tested, and was one of the top performers, too. Right now, the Hot Dish is 47% off ahead of Black Friday.

Why It Won Our Review

With a relatively large capacity of four quarts, the Hot Dish baked beautiful, mess-free meals during our tests. We made potato gratin and flan in each of the casserole pans, and this one produced the best, most evenly-cooked food of the bunch. We can also speak to this pan’s durability: senior editor Riddley Gemperlein-Schirm has owned hers for years and says it still looks “practically new.”

Right now, the Great Jones Hot Dish is over 47% off in all four colors. Not only does the retro-inspired design look great on the dinner table—it’s also built with a smart, ergonomic design that makes it easy to hold. “The wide looped handles are essential for moving the dish into and out of the oven, especially when it’s full of a lasagna or mac and cheese!” Riddley says.

While the listed price doesn’t include a lid, you can buy a matching one separately for an extra $35 (though we recommend using tinfoil if you’re feeling resourceful). When we were done baking, we were also impressed with how easy it was to hand-wash the pan—and even happier to learn that it’s dishwasher-safe. At just $40 ahead of the holidays, it’s a great deal that’ll come in handy during the holidays and long after they’re over.
